How I made my computer science teacher’s head out of chocolate
Backstory
What started as a joke amongst classmates quicky turned into an – almost – life-sized easter egg of my computer science teacher’s head.
I used an Xbox 360 Kinect along with Skanect to get a 3D model of my teachers Head. I then repaired the scan in blender and 3D printed it.
.

Making The Mould
I first covered the print in a food safe spray before I thickened some silicone and brushed it on. This is know as a brush on mould – rather intuitively. I repeated this 4-5 times to thicken the silicone so that it would remain it tact when removing the original print.
I then used plaster bandage to reinforce the silicone so that when the original print is removed, the mould won’t deform.
I then removed the print, cleaned the mould and got ready to fill the mould.
I decided to temper the chocolate to give it more strength and a nice shine however the thermometer I was using – unknown to me – was broken, which meant I tried tempering the chocolate many times with no success. Once finally realising the issue I decided to alter my thermal camera to read the temperature of the chocolate and this worked!!!!

Also pro tip! always double check your numbers….
The print apparently had a very big surface area according to Fusion 360 leading me to order 5 litres of silicone with the idea “I can buy more if I need” however modelling the head as a sphere gives a much smaller and more accurate estimate for the amount of silicone you’ll need – which in my case was about 1 litre……
Now I need to make a project with 4 litres of silicone!
Final Result

To finish the project I wrapped it up in a fancy cake box, added some glasses – as seen in class, and finally made custom packaging to go around the side!
My teacher’s reaction, along with my classmates was fantastic! and potentially a bit creeped out.
